Remember these tips for creating a positive roommate relationship.

Establishing a positive roommate relationship can be challenging, especially if you started on the wrong foot. However, creating a positive experience for both of you may be easier than you think! Here are seven tips for creating a good relationship or saving your relationship with your roommate.

Consider Their Feelings

Empathy is crucial to fostering a positive roommate relationship! So, if they do something that’s bothering you, put yourself in their shoes. They honestly may not know that you’re upset. Instead of treating them like they did it on purpose right off the bat, try focusing on your own feelings and communicating with them without assigning blame.

Create Boundaries & Respect Theirs

Establishing clear boundaries is most effective at the beginning of your relationship. However, knowing what you like and don’t like isn’t always crystal clear when you first move in. As both of you figure out what boundaries would make living together more comfortable, it’s important to be receptive to feedback and discuss expectations without blame.

You Don’t Need to Be Friends

While it would be wonderful to be friends with whoever you’re living with, it’s unnecessary for building a positive roommate relationship. Compatible roommates don’t always mean compatible as friends, and that’s okay!

Be Consistent

While you may not know right away exactly what your boundaries are, it’s always important to be honest with your roommate. If something makes you uncomfortable, speak up! If you ignore your gut feelings about a situation, it could become resentment toward your roommate.

Ask for Permission

The old saying “it’s better to beg for forgiveness” was clearly not talking about living with a roommate! Before making a decision that may impact the entire apartment, like throwing a party, it’s best to ask your roommate. This will allow them to either make alternate plans or get involved if they want.

Keep Their Space in Mind

Nobody likes to live in someone else’s mess. Consider how this may impact your roommate before you put off tasks for later and leave dishes piled in the sink or your laundry in a pile in front of the washer.

Communicate!

Communication can often get overlooked as people believe others can read their minds. Ultimately, it takes two to tango. So, if your boundaries aren’t being respected, it’s your responsibility to let your roommate know respectfully.
