Winter is officially here this week, and we are all looking to keep our heat bills down. You can take action to keep costs down and stay warm without breaking the bank. Some options combat a sky-high heat bill, such as adjusting your thermostat to insulating cold floors with rugs.
Use Your Thermostat
Using your heat constantly might sound like a waste of money, but there is power in efficiency. As long as your space is well insulated, maintaining a constant temperature in your apartment will save you money in the long run. It takes more energy and longer to get the space up to a comfortable temperature than just leaving the thermostat at a maintained temperature. The recommended temperature to set your living space when home or away is 68 degrees.
Bundle Up
One of the simplest ways to keep warm and not crank up the heat is to put on layers. Leave your socks on, wear a sweatshirt, and cover up with blankets when you are on the couch relaxing.
Open and Close Blinds and Shades
Using your blinds can help bring in heat and keep the cold out. Making sure your blinds are open during the day allows the sun to heat your space, and then in the evening, closing the blinds will keep in the heat.
Use a Humidifier
Humidifiers keep moisture in the air, which keeps the atmosphere warmer. They’re good to keep heat in the air and prevent cold weather issues such as dry skin, bloody noses, and other cold-weather health conditions.
Weatherproof Your Apartment
Weatherstripping around windows, doors, and any opening that reaches the elements will help to keep your space warm. Installing a draft blocker can keep cool breezes out of your area. It is always a good idea do a quick online search to find out weatherproofing materials would be helpful for your specific space.
Add Rugs
If you have tile floors or any flooring that is not carpet, it can stay cold, making those rooms more challenging to keep warm. Also, poorly insulated floors are tough to keep warm. Adding rugs can keep your space relatively warmer- the higher the stitch count, the thicker and therefore warmer the carpet will be.
Avoid Apace Heaters
It might seem like a space heater will save you money on electricity, but it is the complete opposite. Space heaters draw a great deal of energy, averaging about $1 an hour, which adds up over time and does not cut down on energy bills. Never mind the fact that they are potentially a fire hazard.
