Questions to Ask During Your Apartment Walkthrough

beechtree apartments apartment walkthrough

Your apartment walkthrough gives you a chance to check out your new home before officially moving in.

You wouldn’t purchase a new car without test-driving it or buy new clothes without trying them on, so why would you rent an apartment without seeing it first? The apartment walkthrough is an essential part of making your final rental decision. Even if the unit and apartment building you are considering is perfect on paper, scheduling a walkthrough can help you feel secure in your decision. As you plan your apartment walkthrough at Beechtree Apartments, look for the following features and ask related questions to know everything you can before signing the lease and moving in.

Fire Safety Features

Confirm that all smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detectors are fully functional. Check your building’s hallways and common areas for fire safety features like emergency exits, sprinklers, and fire alarms. Finally, ask about evacuation plans for your building, so you know where to go in an emergency. Ask where staircases are located if you don’t immediately spot them.

Your Kitchen

The kitchen will contain the most appliances, so examine them carefully during your apartment walkthrough.

  • Examine the range and oven. Turn on the burners and oven to make sure they heat correctly.
  • Test the overhead lights and fan in the range hood.
  • Check the fridge for cleanliness. If it’s plugged in, be sure it’s cold, and there isn’t ice buildup in the freezer.
  • Open the dishwasher to see if it is clean and rust-free.
  • Make sure the garbage disposal runs and the kitchen sink drains.
  • Look under the sink for signs of leaks or water damage.

Your Apartment Bathrooms

In any bathroom in your apartment, be sure to make sure your features are operating properly. Turn on the sink and shower to check the water pressure and temperature and make sure the drains don’t back up. Then, flush the toilet to ensure it drains properly and the bowl refills. Look for cracked tiles, mildew, or rust on the tile or fixtures. Finally, inspect the floor for water. Damaged tile or damp spots around the toilet or tub can signify a leak.

Other Critical Features to Check During an Apartment Walkthrough

After inspecting the crucial areas of your apartment, you can check for a few other features. For instance:

  • Check the AC or heat (depending on the season) and ensure the HVAC system works properly.
  • Inspect your washing machine and dryer.
  • Use your phone charger to test outlets.
  • Turn on and off all light switches to ensure each works as intended.
  • Open and close the windows and doors that are meant to open. Do they work as they should? Do the locks work?
  • Check for doorstops and confirm that the doors are not damaging the walls behind them.
  • Look for signs of water damage on the ceiling, such as bubbling paint, brown spots, etc.
  • Check corners and hidden nooks for signs of rodents and other pests.

Finally, ask to see your apartment amenities – such as the pool/patio, fitness center, mailroom, etc. – to be sure they are cleaned and maintained to your satisfaction. This comprehensive apartment walkthrough will ensure you don’t forget any details before moving in. The walkthrough will, in fact, help you plan even more efficiently for moving in and establishing your new home.
